How Much Wine to Buy
The host's worst nightmare is running out of wine. The second worst is having 10 open bottles left over. Here is the math to get it right.
Bottle Math Basics
750 ml
Standard Bottle Size
5 Glasses
Standard Pour (5 oz)
12 Tastes
Tasting Pour (2 oz)
For a Tasting Event
If the focus is on tasting specific wines (like a Vine Savant game), you want small pours so people can try everything without getting intoxicated too quickly.

- The Rule: 1 bottle of each wine variety for every 10-12 guests.
- Example: For 8 people tasting 4 wines, you need 1 bottle of each (4 total). You will have leftovers.
- Example: For 20 people tasting 4 wines, you need 2 bottles of each (8 total).
For a Dinner or Party
If the wine is just for drinking:
- Dinner Party: Plan for 1/2 to 1 bottle per person. (Assume 2 glasses during appetizers and 2 with dinner).
- Cocktail Party: Plan for 1 glass per person per hour.
Smart Buying Tips
- The "Backup Bottle": Always buy 1-2 extra bottles of a versatile "crowd pleaser" (like a Côtes du Rhône or Sauvignon Blanc). If you run out of the fancy stuff, open these. If not, drink them next week.
- Leftovers? Re-cork and put them in the fridge immediately (even reds!). They will stay fresh for 3-5 days.
- Cooking Wine: If a bottle has been open for a week, freeze it in an ice cube tray. It's perfect for deglazing pans later.
